Company History
The Family Counseling Center was incorporated as a not-for-profit, community mental health service agency in 1976. The agency was established as a result of a cooperative effort among community clergy, human service professional and civic minded individuals who worked on a voluntary basis. In the first four years of it’s establishment, the agency’s mission was to answer the community’s need for individual, marriage, and youth counseling for those who were slipping through the cracks. Counseling services were first held in the basement of the First Congregational United Church of Christ on East Fulton Street in Gloversville. During the early operating years, the agency had temporary offices in the Gloversville YWCA and the former Gloversville Day Nursery.
The Fulton County Coalition Against Domestic Violence was formed in 1982 by a group of volunteers and the 24-hour Domestic Violence hotline was established in 1983. In 1986-1987, the Domestic Violence Program expanded through state funding, allowing the agency to provide the services it does today including the safe shelter and non-residential services for families.
1991 marked the beginning of The Family Counseling Center as we know it today. The Agency began construction on a new office building at 11-21 Broadway in Gloversville. This location was chosen due to its central location and close proximity to public transportation.
In 1992, the agency became an Office of Mental Health licensed Mental Health Clinic which meant therapeutic treatment could be provided both on an outpatient and home basis. The agency continues to operate as the only Office of Mental Health licensed children’s mental health clinic in Fulton County.
In 1994, the Mobile Crisis/Respite and Coordinated Children’s Services Initiative (CCSI) were added, utilizing community mental health reinvestment dollars.
2004 brought changes to the agency’s Domestic Violence program with the renovation of a home and opening of a safe shelter for women and children.
The agency has continued to grow over the years, opening a satellite clinic in Fort Plain in 2010 and Johnstown in 2011 as well as off-site locations for family treatment, the agency’s fiscal departments and school based counseling.
And we are still growing!
