Company Profile

Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic

Company Overview

We are a consumer-centered, family-focused provider of mental health services for children aged zero to 25. The population our Clinic was founded to serve has changed over the years to include children exposed to risks that are far more complex and extensive than ever imagined by our founders. As the complexity of challenges faced by our client population has increased, so has the array of services we offer. Of significance are the Clinic’s models for delivering services including in homes and at preschools and school sites. The Clinic has continued to expand capacity in serving communities where the rates of poverty and domestic and community violence are high, thus significantly increasing the need for our services.

The mission of the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic is to provide quality mental health services to a community in great need by ensuring easy access and promoting early intervention. The Clinic enhances the mental health and well-being of children and youth ages zero to 25 years, and their caregivers.

Company History

The Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic was established in 1924 by the Commonwealth Fund of New York and the National Committee for Mental Hygiene (now Mental Health America of Los Angeles) as part of a national initiative to create access to mental health services for emotionally disturbed children. The Clinic was one of two such clinics established in California and the first of its kind in Los Angeles.

The first of the Clinic’s several “homes” was at the Anita Baldwin Hospital for Babies on South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. For a few years in the 1950’s and 60’s, it was located on the campus of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. From 1964 to 1994 it leased space from the University of Southern California. Today, the Clinic’s facilities include the Child and Youth Development Center and Administrative Offices in University Park, the Harriet and Charles Luckman Building in Exposition Park, and the Leimert Park Office.
