Columbus, Ohio (43215) – Bill Lee, Chief Executive Officer for Southeast, Inc., announced an award of $1.2 million from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for Southeast, Inc. for the period August 1, 2011 to May 31, 2013. First year program costs are $2,221,244 with the federal award being 25% of the program or $557.313. The award designates Southeast as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) providing Healthcare for the Homeless in Columbus and Franklin County. The highly competitive grants were awarded to 67 community health center programs across the country. Southeast is one of ten new access centers and one of two Ohio centers to receive the highly competitive award.

In announcing the grant, Lee stated “Southeast has a long history of serving people in our community who are homeless. This award will enable us to fully integrate primary care into the behavioral health, homeless sheltering and housing supports we currently provide. We are extremely pleased that HRSA has selected Southeast as a new access point for primary health care for the homeless.” Southeast began providing outreach services to the homeless in 1984 and was later awarded Federal PATH funding for homeless outreach. In 2006, Southeast acquired Friends of the Homeless and Rebecca’s Place which are homeless shelters and supportive services for men and women.

Southeast has provided primary health care at its downtown location since 1996 and is currently receiving federal funds from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as a demonstration project site for the integration of behavioral and primary health care.

Michele Heritage, Executive Director of the Community Shelter Board (CSB) stated, “Southeast, Inc., has been a leader in our community in providing essential, life saving services to people who are experiencing homelessness. The Community Shelter Board is thrilled that Southeast is receiving funding for a much needed new health center. Southeast has demonstrated a long standing commitment to serving the most vulnerable people in our community and with this new health center, Southeast will be able to bring healthcare services to those who desperately need it. CSB looks forward to our continued partnership with Southeast as we work together to end homelessness in our community.”

Southeast is one of the largest behavioral healthcare organizations in Ohio and serves over 12,000 people annually through the provision of mental health, substance abuse, primary health care and other and ancillary medical services. Southeast began serving the central Ohio community in 1978 and now has offices in six Ohio counties.

Southeast, Inc.’s mission is to serve as a comprehensive provider of mental health, chemical dependency, healthcare, and homeless services, assisting diverse populations regardless of their economic status. Southeast’s services enhance wellness and recovery, thereby improving families, workplaces, and communities. Southeast is accredited by The Joint Commission and is funded, in part, by the ADAMH Board of Franklin County, the Community Shelter Board and its funders, and the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Belmont, Harrison, and Monroe Counties.
